Mental Health and Wellbeing Care

Mental health is a term that covers a wide range of emotional, social and psychological aspects of an individual’s well being. Specifically, it refers to the way an individual handles stress, the way they perceive the world around them and the way they make decisions. It is a crucial part of a person’s wellbeing, and it can be influenced by many factors.

One of the most important factors in mental health is genetic makeup. This is because it can be passed on to people in the family. Also, there are some things that are risk factors for , including being exposed to trauma, physical or mental violence, or economic hardship. During the 19th century, the number of insane asylums grew exponentially. This was due to industrialization. Madness was no longer regarded as a spiritual phenomenon, and was instead considered a physical disorder. As such, madness was no longer seen as a moral responsibility.

In the twentieth century, there was a move to increase awareness of mental disorders and to provide treatment. Clinical psychology developed as a profession, while mental hygiene movements were launched in the United States in the early twentieth century. Psychiatry eventually eliminated the term nervous breakdown, although a wealth of stress-related feelings were described as being “nervous”.

A high level of comorbidity between different types of mental disorders has led to the proposal of dimensional models. These models use continuum or symptom profiles to separate normal from abnormal behaviors. Some have also suggested a three-dimensional model that includes internal and externalizing aspects.

Social factors, such as bullying and abuse, have also been cited as being important. They include socioeconomic inequality, traumatic events, neglect and employment problems. Individuals and families can also be affected by local and global threats. Such threats can include economic downturns, humanitarian emergencies, forced displacement and climate change.

Although there are many factors that influence mental health, most of these are not necessarily risk factors. Rather, they can be protective factors. There are also coping skills that can help people deal with stressful situations and maintain a good posture. Having a coping strategy can also help you recognize when you need help.

Many mental illnesses can be treated using psychosocial interventions, behavioural interventions and occupational therapies. Others can be diagnosed and treated in psychiatric hospitals. Talk therapy can help to improve a person’s overall emotional, physical and social well being.

The Prevention Institute is a collaborative, community-based organization that works with communities to shift practices and policies to improve mental health. For example, the Institute has formed partnerships with faith leaders to reduce stigma associated with depression.
